Wandle Riverside, consultation management
Ward Homes, a division of Barratt Homes, is developing a proposal for 'Wandle Riverside', a sustainable mixed-use development on the Wandle Valley Trading Estates in Hackbridge. The scheme will include approximately 120 new homes; public access for pedestrians and cyclists along the River Wandle; and the opportunity to maintain long-term employment.
Key to the consultation approach was to embrace localism, particularly as Hackbridge is home to one of the UK’s first Neighbourhood Development Groups who would be closely engaged in the consultation process. Initially, we developed a consultation strategy, determined a consultation zone and compiled communications databases. To begin the pre-submission consultation, we issued a newsletter to residents in the consultation zone, along with letters and briefs to local stakeholders. A press release was sent to local media and a preliminary online consultation website was launched. A public exhibition was then held in February 2012, with preview sessions for the Hackbridge and Beddington Corner Neighbourhood Planning Group (HBC NGD) and elected representatives. Following the event, the online consultation was updated with further information and a press release was issued highlighting the feedback received. Several meetings were held with the HBC NDG throughout the consultation period, with the plans and layout being revised in the summer of 2012 in response to local feedback.
We have recently compiled the Statement of Community Consultation which will be submitted alongside the planning application in January 2013. We will continue to support Ward Homes and landowners City & Provincial through to determination of the application, with post submission support including letters and briefs and an update newsletter in the new year.
